Fijian communal life is organized around the village and loyalty to the local chief. Subsistence farming, with crops such as taro, cassava, and yams, together with small-scale fishing, supports many families, although the tourism sector is drawing increasing numbers of workers to urban areas.
Mutual respect, collective cooperation, and shared resources define life together. Family gatherings and important decisions are often accompanied by the traditional drinking of kava, a beverage made from pounded roots that symbolizes welcome and peace.
Christianity is the faith professed by the vast majority of Fijians and is woven into civil ceremonies, leadership decisions, and the weekly routines of village life. Congregations serve as gathering places at the heart of the community.
Despite the strong Christian presence, customs and fears associated with traditional animist beliefs still influence popular thinking on certain occasions. The greatest challenge is to deepen people’s understanding of Scripture so that faith extends beyond inherited cultural tradition.

The islands face ongoing environmental challenges, such as intense tropical storms and rising sea levels, which affect coastal villages. Families also face a rising cost of living and the migration of young people to urban centers. Discipleship is needed to help younger generations remain firmly rooted in the Word amid rapid cultural change.
