Who they are

The Arara do Rio Branco are an indigenous people living in the state of Mato Grosso, in the Amazon region of Brazil, along the waters and forests of the Rio Branco, a tributary of the Aripuanã River. They are a small group, with a population estimated at about 200 people, placing them among the country’s most vulnerable and threatened peoples. Over the past century they faced the advance of exploration fronts, diseases brought from outside, and the loss of much of their traditional territory, which caused a sharp reduction in their numbers and the dispersion of many families.

Despite these losses, the Arara do Rio Branco keep their own identity alive along with their bond to the land where their ancestors lived. The recovery and recognition of their territory were important steps for the people’s continuity. Their own language, Arara do Rio Branco, is in a very fragile state, since contact with national society and the growing use of Portuguese have reduced the number of fluent speakers.

Today the Arara do Rio Branco seek to strengthen their internal organization, ensure the health and education of their children, and preserve the knowledge, stories, and customs passed down by their elders. They remain a people fighting for their physical and cultural survival amid the pressures of the Amazon frontier.

How they live

The Arara do Rio Branco live in close relationship with the forest and rivers of the Mato Grosso Amazon. Their livelihood comes mainly from hunting, fishing, gathering fruits and forest products, and small garden plots where they grow foods such as cassava. Daily life is organized around family and community, with shared labor and food, and knowledge passed down from generation to generation through spoken word and daily life together.

As a people with a small population, they face serious challenges: pressure on their lands, the presence of activities such as logging in the surrounding area, difficult access to health services, and the constant threat to the survival of their language and customs. Defending their territory and caring for the new generations are central concerns for the people’s continuity.

What they believe

The worldview of the Arara do Rio Branco is rooted in traditional ethnic religions, in which the visible world and the world of spirits are intertwined. The forest, rivers, animals, and ancestors are understood as part of a living spiritual reality, and the rites, stories, and practices inherited from the elders guide the community’s relationship with these forces.

In this belief system, the most experienced members play an important role in mediating with the spirit world and preserving sacred knowledge. As far as is known, the message of the gospel has not yet been understood or received by this people, who remain practically without access to the Scriptures in their own language and without an established Christian witness among them.

Needs

The Arara do Rio Branco need, above all, to know the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ, in a way that respects and reaches the heart of their culture and language. There is no translation of the Scriptures in their language, and the people remain without a Christian witness present among them. Alongside these spiritual needs are concrete and urgent needs as well: the protection of their territory, health care, the strengthening of their threatened language, and the very survival of a people so small and vulnerable. Let us intercede that doors would open and that the Lord would send those who will carry the hope of the gospel faithfully and respectfully.
