Who they are

The Isse are an indigenous people who live in the Brazilian Amazon region, in the vast forest of western Amazonas, near river basins that stretch across hard to reach lands. Like many peoples of the deep forests, they live in small numbers and keep little contact with the surrounding society, which means there are few public records about them. Their existence is intimately tied to the forest around them, their source of sustenance, shelter, and identity.

The identity of the Isse is rooted in their land, their language, and the customs passed down from generation to generation. Living in relative isolation, they preserve traditional ways of life and keep their distance from major centers and busier routes. This condition protects their culture, but it also makes them especially vulnerable to the pressures advancing on Amazonian territories.

As a forest people, the Isse share with so many other Amazonian groups a deep dependence on the land and the rivers. Much about them still remains unknown, and so it is fitting to speak with humility and respect, recognizing that this is a people created by God, with their own dignity and history, even if little known to those outside.

How they live

The way of life of the Isse, like that of other peoples of the Amazon forests, is rooted in the forest and the rivers. Their sustenance usually comes from hunting, fishing, gathering fruit, and cultivating small gardens, in careful balance with the environment they inhabit. Their social organization tends to revolve around families and kinship ties, and knowledge about the land, plants, and cycles of nature is passed from the elders to the young.

Living in a remote region brings growing challenges. The advance on Amazonian territories, changes in the environment, and contact with diseases brought from outside represent real threats to the continuity of this people. Keeping their language, their customs, and their autonomy amid these pressures is a constant struggle, lived in silence, far from the eyes of the majority.

What they believe

The spiritual life of the Isse is tied to traditional ethnic religions, marked by a worldview in which the forest, the rivers, the animals, and the ancestors hold a central place. In this worldview, the visible and invisible worlds are intertwined, and daily life is surrounded by spiritual meanings connected to nature and to the spirits that, they believe, dwell within it.

As far as is known, the Gospel of Jesus Christ has not yet reached this people in any significant way, and there is no established Christian community among them, as far as can be determined. They live, therefore, without knowledge of the Good News of God’s love revealed in Christ, still waiting for the message of salvation to reach them in a way they can understand and receive.

Needs

The Isse carry deep needs, both spiritual and practical. Spiritually, they live without access to the Gospel and without Scripture in their own understanding, remaining an unreached people. Practically, they face the fragility of those who live in remote and threatened territory: care for their health, protection of their lands, and the preservation of their culture and way of life amid outside pressures. To intercede for them is to cry out that they be protected, respected in their dignity, and above all, reached by the love of Christ.
