Borari
UnreachedThe Borari are an indigenous people of western Pará, in the lower Tapajós River region, with a strong presence in the village of Alter do Chão, a district of Santarém, and also along the banks of the Maró and Arapiuns rivers. They are considered descendants of ancient populations who inhabited that part of the Amazon long before the arrival of colonizers, with a deep ancestral connection to the waters, beaches, and forests of the Tapajós.
Throughout the colonial period, especially from the missionary work of the eighteenth century onward, the people underwent an intense process of cultural transformation and were divided among different localities, which weakened the transmission of many traditional elements. Their original language fell out of everyday use, and today the Borari communicate in Portuguese, which has become the daily language of the communities.
From the first decades of this century, the Borari strengthened their movement for ethnic affirmation and recognition as an indigenous people, fighting for the right to their land and for the appreciation of their identity. They are a relatively small group, estimated at around eight hundred people according to available data, and continue to rebuild and reaffirm who they are amid the challenges of contemporary life in the Amazon.

The life of the Borari is tied to the river and the forest. Their livelihood comes mainly from fishing, subsistence farming, gathering, and, more recently, the tourism that has grown around Alter do Chão, drawing visitors with its freshwater beaches and the beauty of the region. This proximity to tourism brings opportunities but also pressures on the territory, on their way of life, and on the natural resources the people depend on.
Their social organization values communal life, local leadership, and the memory of ancestors. Traditional festivals, such as the Sairé and the people’s annual festival, hold a central place on the calendar and express collective identity. Among the main challenges they face today are the demarcation and protection of their territory, land speculation, environmental impacts, and the defense of their culture amid the changes brought by urbanization and the growing flow of outsiders.
The worldview of the Borari is rooted in ethnic religions, marked by an intense spiritual relationship with nature, with the rivers, the forest, and the beings and forces that, in the traditional view, inhabit those places. The waters of the Tapajós, the forests, and places considered sacred play an important role in how the people understand the world and their own existence.
Over the centuries, this spiritual universe has mixed with elements brought by colonization, especially in expressions such as the Sairé, which combines symbols and practices of diverse origins. Even so, a distinct religiosity prevails among the Borari, tied to the land and to ancestry, and the clear and respectful proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ remains a need among them.
Above all, the Borari need to know clearly and respectfully the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ, in a way that engages with their history, their language, and their identity, without breaking with the dignity of their people. On a practical level, they face the struggle to secure their territory, the pressure of tourism and speculation, challenges in health and education, and the defense of their culture. They are a small people, still very little reached, in need of constant intercession and a sensitive, patient, and loving Christian presence.
