In Middle Eastern war zones, where Islam has dominated for centuries and conversion can mean death, missionaries and local Christian leaders are reporting an unusual phenomenon with increasing frequency: Muslims, including members of extremist groups, describing encounters with Jesus Christ in dreams and visions. "Every time there is a war, there is a great movement toward Christ," said a local pastor who remains anonymous for his safety. These accounts, documented by CBN News and mission organizations working in the region, point to an unusual spiritual openness amid the chaos.
The patterns are consistent: individuals report seeing a figure of light who identifies himself as Jesus, often with a message of peace or a call to repentance. In many cases, the dream precedes their first contact with any Christian or Christian material. Missionaries describe cases of former combatants, women subjected to sexual slavery and traumatized civilians who actively sought out a Christian community after these supernatural encounters. The movement is substantial: reports from mission organizations speak of hundreds of thousands of Muslims coming to Christ "in waves" across various parts of the Islamic world.
This growth carries risks. Converts from Islam face the threat of death for apostasy in countries such as Afghanistan and Iran, and in parts of Iraq and Syria. Many practice their faith in complete secrecy, meeting in small house groups with no public visibility. Leaders of Church Planting Movements (CPMs) document that most of the largest movements of people coming to Christ in recent decades have occurred precisely among religious groups previously considered "closed" to the gospel. Paradoxically, the crisis in the Middle East appears to be accelerating this process.
How to pray: Pray for Muslims who have encountered Christ in dreams and have yet to connect with a Christian community, that God will guide them to a brother or sister in the faith. Intercede for the protection of converts from Islam who practice their faith in secret. Cry out for courage for local Christians who disciple new believers in conditions of extreme danger. Ask God to open the heavens even further over the Middle East, and that no war or persecution will be able to extinguish the spread of the gospel.
