The town of Thantlang in Chin State, Myanmar, a predominantly Christian region, was virtually destroyed by the country’s military in the years following the 2021 military coup. According to a February 2026 report by International Christian Concern (ICC), 21 of the town’s 22 churches were demolished or burned down by military forces. In total, more than 340 churches and Christian buildings have been destroyed across the country since the coup. In addition to churches, homes, schools and community centers have been systematically targeted in attacks that have displaced tens of thousands of civilians.
The repression disproportionately affects Christian ethnic minorities, especially in Chin, Kachin, Shan, Kayah and Sagaing. In one documented case, the military bombed three churches in Chin State, killing six civilians, including a pastor. Open Doors figures indicate that 149 Christians were killed and 218 imprisoned between 2022 and 2025, with 11 pastors murdered and 13 still detained.
In May 2026, ICC reports indicated that military forces had gained significant ground against armed ethnic groups defending religious minorities. This further worsened the humanitarian situation, with more than 90,000 displaced people in Chin alone and 237,000 in Kachin. Despite the extreme conditions, the faith of Myanmar’s Christians remains unshakable, with worship services taking place in ruins and forests, away from the regime’s watchful eyes.
Cry out to God for the protection of Christians in Chin, Kachin and other regions under military attack in Myanmar. Intercede for the release of imprisoned pastors and the rebuilding of destroyed churches. Pray that the Military Council will be held internationally accountable for atrocities committed against religious minorities. May churches around the world raise funds to support pastoral and humanitarian care for Myanmar’s displaced people.
