After nearly 200 years during which Christianity was banned, the faith has grown steadily in Nepal since 1951, with the gradual expansion of Christian churches, schools and hospitals. However, Christians still make up only around 1.76% of Nepal's population, while more than 81% identify as Hindus. In a new report, Dr. Linda Burkle, a researcher with International Christian Concern (ICC), examines the link between rising Hindu nationalism and the persecution of Christians in the country, analyzing the history of Christianity in Nepal, the discriminatory application of its laws and the consequences for Nepali believers today.
According to Christian leaders in Nepal, growing Hindu nationalism seeks both to reinforce the country's identity as a Hindu nation and to suppress the growth of Christianity. Christian converts, especially those who have left Hinduism, frequently face severe social consequences. Recent years have seen growing concern over attacks on churches, arrests of pastors and the use of blasphemy and anti-conversion laws against Christians. Hindu nationalist groups have become more active, and there are reports that political and ideological influences from neighboring India have strengthened anti-Christian sentiment in Nepal.
Persecution of Christianity in Nepal includes pastors imprisoned on charges of "illegal conversion," churches attacked and family members subjected to social ostracism and violence for leaving Hinduism. The ICC report highlights that, although Nepal's constitution guarantees religious freedom, laws are applied in a discriminatory manner against Christian minorities. The growth of the Christian faith, especially among marginalized communities seeking social acceptance and religious freedom, continues to be seen as a threat by the Hindu majority.
Pray for the Church in Nepal, which is growing despite adversity and continues to be a light in the darkness. Intercede for pastors and Christian leaders facing the risk of imprisonment and persecution, asking for protection and divine wisdom. Ask God to open the hearts of Nepali Hindus to the gospel, and to sustain Christians who have converted from Hinduism in their faith under social and family pressure. Cry out for Nepal's laws to be applied equally and for religious freedom to be respected for everyone.
