Overview

Kazakhstan is home to 27 unreached people groups, almost all of Muslim tradition. The largest is the Kazakh people itself, numbering more than 14 million, still with very little contact with an evangelical church or the Scriptures in their own language. Other groups also appear, such as Uzbeks, Uyghurs, Azerbaijanis and Chechens, many living in cities and villages of the steppe. Decades of Soviet rule left a strong secular legacy, and today much of the population moves between atheism inherited from the Soviet Union and an Islam increasingly tied to national identity.
