Overview

Mayotte has 8 different people groups. Six of them, together totaling more than 319 thousand people (almost the entire population of the island), are considered unreached by the gospel. The largest group is the Comorian Maore, with Swahili culture and Muslim faith, followed by the Bushi (descendants of Malagasy immigrants from the 19th century), the Swahili, and groups of Mozambican origin such as the Makonde and Makhuwa-Meetto. Only residents of French and Malagasy (non-Bushi) origin have a meaningful Christian presence, mainly because they already arrived on the island with the faith.
