Who they are

The Ainu people, also called Äynu, are a small Turkic-speaking Muslim community living scattered among the Uyghurs in northwestern China. Despite living in close contact with the Uyghurs, the Ainu preserve their own language, used only among themselves and distinct from the Uyghur spoken around them. This carefully guarded language helps keep alive the identity of this people, shaped by centuries of proximity to the Uyghur world without losing their Turkic roots.
