Who they are

The Alehemir are a small people of the Nuba Mountains, in South Kordofan state, Sudan. They live in villages scattered across the slopes and valleys of the region, where a language with varieties such as Katcha, Kadugli and Miri is spoken.

They are part of the large group of Nuba peoples, known for their diversity of languages and customs within a territory of rugged terrain. Their identity is tied to the land where they live, the language spoken at home and the family bonds that unite each village.

Because they are few and live in hard-to-reach places, they rarely appear in studies and reports. Even so, they are a people with their own name, memory and dignity, whom God knows and loves, and whose story deserves to be heard with attention and respect.

History and origin

Little has been recorded in writing about the origin of the Alehemir. Like other peoples of the Nuba Mountains, they have lived in these hills for a long time, which have served as shelter and home to communities with distinct languages and traditions, preserved largely through oral memory.

Their language belongs to the Nilo-Saharan family, which points to ancient roots in the region. Today, the people's history is kept above all by the elders, who pass on to the new generations the names, the villages and the memories of the group.

How they live

Alehemir life is rural and revolves around the fields. Families grow sorghum and corn and raise cattle, sheep and goats, living by the rhythm of the rains and the harvests. Work is shared, and the village functions as a large network of relatives and neighbors who help one another in the fields and in daily needs.

Traditional dance and wrestling hold a prominent place among the people’s cultural expressions. These are moments of gathering, joy and collective pride, in which young people and adults show strength, skill and belonging. Access to clean water depends on drilled wells, and the distance from schools and health services shapes the routine of families.

What they believe

The Alehemir follow Sunni Islam, a faith that marks the calendar, the celebrations and the moral references of the community. In small, close-knit villages, religion is lived communally and is intertwined with the sense of belonging to the people.

For this reason, changing faith is usually seen as a break from family and village, and not merely a personal choice. There is very little knowledge of Jesus among them, and many have never spoken with anyone who follows him. Respect, listening and friendship are the way for the message of the gospel to be understood, shared with patience and in the heart language of each family.

Language and the Bible

The language of the Alehemir is Katcha-Kadugli-Miri, which already has a written form, with an orthography common to its varieties. The New Testament is available in this language, but the whole Bible is not yet. The challenge is to make this Word truly reach the villages, to be read by those who can read and heard in the family by those who cannot, so that every home may know Jesus in its own language.

Barriers to the gospel

Several factors combine to keep the Alehemir without access to the gospel. Muslim identity is part of the people’s identity, and following Jesus can mean losing one’s place in the family and the village. The mountainous, isolated region makes it hard for anyone who could share the message to visit, and there is no significant Christian presence among them, nor a constant witness. Distance also limits the reach of any material already produced in the local language.

Needs

Alehemir villages face concrete needs: clean water depends on wells, and schools and health services are far from the communities. There is a need for dignified living conditions, education and care for the health of families.

In the spiritual realm, the essential is missing: someone who lives and shares the gospel with love among them, in their own language, and who walks alongside those who wish to know Christ. May the presence of God reach every village with peace and hope.
