Who they are

Christianity is part of life for the Angami, a Naga people of northeastern India. The Baptist presence is especially significant among them. Their identity brings together the Angami language, village life and celebrations such as Sekrenyi, which also draw in families who have moved to cities.

In Nagaland, speech varies from village to village. Even far from home, cultural gatherings bring generations together and open up conversations about preserving their people’s heritage and living out the Christian faith today.

How they live

Agriculture remains an important activity, while some Angami work in cities, in trade, public service and education. In rural areas, they also produce textiles and items made of wood and metal. Community life finds expression in festivals: at a Sekrenyi celebration in New Delhi, young and old gathered to hear poetry, sing and take part in traditional wrestling.

What they believe

The Christian faith has largely replaced older religious practices among the Angami, with Baptist churches especially prominent. The community continues to discuss the relationship between culture and faith. At a Sekrenyi gathering, participants talked about which traditions could be valued and which conflicted with Christian practice. These conversations call for pastoral care and knowledge of Scripture.

Needs

Young Angami seeking work in cities need training that expands their opportunities, as the education they received in rural areas may limit their career options. Churches can support this transition to urban life through biblical teaching and fellowship. The existing dialogue about culture and faith also deserves attention, so that new generations know their history and grow in following Jesus.
