Who they are

The Arapesh Abu’ live in the Torricelli Mountains in northern Papua New Guinea, in villages in East Sepik and Sandaun provinces. Most identify as Christians. The Abu’ language is endangered: younger people are increasingly using Tok Pisin. As far back as the late 20th century, a linguist from Papua New Guinea and his wife reported that their five Tok Pisin-speaking children did not take Abu’ lessons at home seriously.
