The Arleng, also widely known as the Karbi, are a traditional Indigenous people who inhabit the lush hills and valleys of northeastern India, with a significant presence in the state of Assam. With a distinctive cultural identity, they preserve a rich oral tradition of legends, songs, and genealogies passed down from parents to children. Their language, part of the Tibeto-Burman branch, is at the heart of community life, connecting families to their ancestral land and the cycles of nature that shape their communal celebrations and festivals.

How they live
Everyday village life revolves around agriculture, with the traditional cultivation of rice, vegetables, and ginger on slopes and floodplains. Handweaving and bamboo work are common household crafts. Community decisions are often mediated by councils of respected elders, strengthening social cohesion and mutual assistance during planting and harvest seasons.
What they believe
Although influenced by regional forms of Hinduism, many Arleng maintain traditional religious practices centered on reverence for local deities and nature spirits. Community festivals and rituals seek blessings for crops and harmony in the village. A significant portion of the people have embraced the Christian faith, which coexists with the ancestral beliefs and customs that still shape the group’s identity.
