Unreached people group
Arra
The Arra are a small people of the Nuba Mountains, in South Kordofan state, Sudan. They live in six villages in the Tobo region and belong to the broader group of Nuba peoples, known for the variety of languages and customs that coexist among the hills and valleys of this region.
This is a close-knit community in which everyone knows one another and life is shared from one season to the next. Families who farm the same land, small villages and a routine shaped by the rains form the backdrop of Arra identity.
In daily life they use Sudanese Arabic, the common language that connects them to their neighbors and to the rest of the country. Every village holds a story that God knows well, and every Arra family is seen by Him with care and love.
The origins of the Arra are poorly documented, and the people's memory of their earliest days has not yet been widely recorded. What is known is that they belong to the mosaic of peoples that has long inhabited the Nuba Mountains, a region of rugged terrain that offered refuge and allowed many communities to preserve their own ways of life.
Today the Arra are a small community, but one with its own identity. Islam is the religion they identify with, and Arabic is the language they use every day, marks of their coexistence with the rest of Sudan.

The Arra live from the land. They grow sorghum and maize and raise livestock, and the rhythm of the year is set by the rains: the time to plant, to tend the fields and to harvest organizes the work and life of the village. Much of the heavy work is done through mutual help, with neighbors and relatives joining forces in the fields and in the care of the herds.
The villages are small and very close, so decisions, joys and losses are usually lived together. In a place where few services are within reach, solidarity among people is what sustains daily life.
Officially, the Arra identify as Sunni Muslims, and Islam is an important part of how they present themselves to their neighbors and to the country. Faith is lived in community, tied to families and village traditions.
At the same time, many maintain traditional practices of animist origin, which coexist with Islam. This mixture shows a people who seek protection, meaning and blessing for the harvest, health and children, and who take the spiritual world around them seriously. For those who live by rain and harvest, blessing on the land and protection of the home are not distant matters but questions of every day, and it is on this concrete ground that faith finds its expression.
The everyday language of the Arra is Sudanese Arabic, and the Scriptures already exist in it: portions were published over the last century and the New Testament is available, including in digital and audio formats, along with the film on the life of Jesus. The complete Bible does not yet exist in this language. The challenge is to ensure that this material actually reaches the villages, where access to schools is limited and the spoken word tends to reach more people than the written word.
A people only truly understands the gospel when they hear it in the language of their heart. See how far the translation has come.

For the Arra, the Muslim faith is part of who they are before their family and community, and changing religion would mean risking the bonds that sustain all of life. To this is added the instability of the region and the absence of a continuous Christian witness among them. Without churches nearby and without people who live out the gospel in their midst, many have never had the opportunity to hear who Jesus is.
Community leaders report that their villages have no schools or health clinics. The region faces instability, poor infrastructure and periods of food shortage, so the needs for education, medical care and food security are real and urgent.
On the spiritual level, the Arra need access to the Scriptures in a form they can understand, friends who walk with them in respect, and communities of faith that can be born among their own people, so that they may know the love of Christ.
