Who they are

The Awak live in the Kaltungo area of Gombe State, Nigeria. They call themselves Yebu, and their language is Nii Yebu. In the early 20th century, they lived in settlements on Awak Hill and farmed terraces on its slopes; after World War II, they began establishing settlements at the foot of the hill and on the plains. Most follow traditional religions, and a substantial proportion are Christian. There are also small groups of Muslims and people with no religious affiliation.
