UnreachedThe Baenã are an indigenous people originally from southern Bahia, historically associated with the vast forests located between the Cachoeira, Pardo, and Gongogi rivers and surrounding areas. They were one of the last autonomous groups in the region, and their contact process with mainstream society continued until the early decades of the 20th century, when they began to be gathered into indigenous posts in what is now southern Bahia’s territory.
Throughout the 20th century, amid pressures on their land and forced coexistence with other groups, the Baenã grew close to neighboring peoples such as the Pataxó Hã-Hã-Hãe, the Camacã, the Sapuiá-Quiriri, and others, forming a collective of peoples. Because of this history of closeness and mixing, a significant portion of Baenã descendants came to identify within this larger group, and today very few still distinctly hold the Baenã name.
The people’s traditional language is no longer spoken day to day, and the Baenã now communicate in Portuguese. Even as a very small group, they preserve the memory of a distinct identity and an ancestry tied to the forests of southern Bahia, today rooted mainly in indigenous territories of that region.

The Baenã live in indigenous territories of southern Bahia, in a region marked by long conflicts over the demarcation and possession of traditional lands. Families’ livelihood rests mainly on small scale agriculture, gathering, and other activities possible within the areas they occupy, amid the difficulties common to indigenous communities pressured by outside interests in their land.
Social organization is communal and strongly tied to kinship and to coexistence with the neighboring peoples with whom they share territory and history. Being a very small group, the Baenã face the challenge of preserving the memory of their distinct identity in the face of the loss of their ancestral language and intense mixing with other ethnic groups, while also dealing with the shortfalls in health, education, and land security that affect the region.
The Baenã worldview is rooted in the ethnic indigenous religions of southern Bahia, in which the world is perceived as inhabited by spiritual forces and entities that manifest and take part in community life. In this tradition, collective rituals play an important role in bringing the people together, giving meaning to the activities of life, and renewing the bond with ancestors and with the land.
Among the peoples of the region with whom the Baenã live, ritual practices tied to indigenous ancestry remain present, and in some cases coexist with Christian influences brought in from outside over the decades. Even so, according to available data, this people remains without a significant evangelical presence, and the proclamation of the gospel in a way that is understandable and respectful of their culture is, to a great extent, something still to happen among them.
The Baenã need, above all, to know the love of God revealed in Jesus Christ in a way that respects and honors their history and indigenous identity. Being a very small people marked by intense mixing with other groups, there is a risk that they will remain invisible also with regard to spiritual care. On the practical level, there are also needs for security over their land, health, education, and the preservation of the memory of who they are. May there be those who draw near to them with gentleness, willing to walk alongside them and to present the hope of the gospel.
