Who they are
The Bakuda form a Dalit community in southern India. The group’s own language is Tulu, though many also use the languages of the regions where they live. They are tied to the land: they primarily work on the farms of higher-caste landowners, as well as engaging in activities such as construction and urban cleaning. Like many Dalit groups, they carry an identity shaped by caste, which continues to define social roles and opportunities within the community.
