People
The Banten Javanese inhabit the westernmost part of the island of Java, mainly in the coastal and rural areas of Banten Province, Indonesia. They descend from early Javanese migrants who settled in the area during the height of the historic Sultanate of Banten, developing their own dialect of Javanese with strong Sundanese influences.
Their identity is marked by this cultural fusion and a deep sense of community. They proudly preserve local traditions that balance family ties and mutual cooperation in their villages.

Most families earn their living through agriculture, especially growing rice on irrigated land, as well as coastal fishing and small-scale trade at local markets. Community life follows the principle of collective work, with neighbors gathering to build houses or bring in the harvest. Communal feasts featuring traditional rice and fish dishes strengthen relationships and celebrate milestones in social life.
The vast majority of the population professes Sunni Islam, which lies at the heart of their identity and family rituals. Traditional Javanese mystical practices and beliefs in spirits and ancestral blessings still permeate daily life for many residents. Faith and local customs go hand in hand, leading the community to view any religious change with considerable reservation.

Communities face challenges related to rural incomes, access to basic sanitation and improvements to infrastructure in coastal villages. Spiritually, there is a lack of ongoing discipleship, support for isolated believers and accessible resources that communicate the grace of Christ clearly and in ways that relate to local life.
