Most Basketo families rely on subsistence agriculture, cultivating enset, coffee, grains, and root crops on fertile hillsides. Raising cattle and sheep also supplements household livelihoods. Villages place high value on communal cooperative labor during planting and harvest seasons, keeping alive the tradition of hospitality and sharing meals among neighbors and relatives.
The vast majority of the Basketo profess the Christian faith, with a significant evangelical and Protestant presence alongside the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition. Faith is expressed dynamically through vibrant worship, communal prayers, and festive gatherings. Certain ancestral customs and beliefs concerning the spirit world still influence aspects of daily life, calling for faithful, ongoing biblical teaching.
