People
The Bebeli live in villages near Kimbe, the capital of West New Britain Province in Papua New Guinea. Living in an area with increasing urban activity and daily contact with speakers of other languages, the community faces the challenge of passing its mother tongue on to younger generations, who primarily use Tok Pisin.
The Christian faith has been present in the community for decades, and most people identify as Christians. The main challenge for local pastoral ministry is to move beyond nominal faith, with an emphasis on deep discipleship, well-equipped leadership, and an understanding of Scripture in the language of the heart.
