The Berava form a traditional Sinhalese community in Sri Lanka, historically recognized for their artistic and cultural expressions. Known as guardians of ritual music, traditional drumming patterns, and classical temple dances, they play a vital role in preserving the island’s cultural heritage. They communicate in Sinhala and share the deep community ties characteristic of the country’s villages.

Although part of the community remains involved in music, drum making, and traditional astrology, many Berava now work in agriculture, commerce, and urban services. They have faced centuries of discrimination linked to the local caste system, which has often limited their access to better economic opportunities. Family life is marked by strong bonds and the oral transmission of their crafts and artistic talents from generation to generation.
The vast majority follow Theravada Buddhism, which shapes the community’s calendar of festivals, rites of passage, and moral values. Alongside Buddhist practices, many turn to traditional rituals for healing and spiritual protection against afflictions, seeking to appease beings from local folklore. In this setting, following Christ requires courage to break with ancestral spiritual customs.

The Berava need to overcome historical social barriers and gain greater access to vocational education and stable employment. Spiritually, they need to hear the gospel message and discover that their true worth and eternal identity are grounded in the love and redemption God offers to each person.
