The Bhotia are mountain communities with Tibetan cultural and linguistic roots, living mainly along the Himalayan slopes in Nepal and India. Historically known for trading across mountain passes and enduring the harsh climate, they preserve millennia-old traditions adapted to life at high altitudes.
Despite profound economic changes and growing integration with communities in the valleys, they maintain a strong sense of community, sharing festivals, kinship ties and local dialects associated with Nepali and Tibetan.

Cooperation between neighbors is essential for enduring the harsh winter, with people sharing work in the fields and caring for the herds.
The vast majority follow Tibetan Buddhism, extensively blended with older shamanic animist traditions. Prayer flags, prayer wheels and visits to monasteries are part of their routine as they seek spiritual protection against the forces of nature and accumulate merit for the next life.
Religious ceremonies and community rituals shape almost every stage of family life.

Geographic isolation makes it difficult to bring basic medical care and quality educational opportunities to these communities during the colder months. There is also a great need for local discipleship initiatives that help new believers persevere in their faith with wisdom while maintaining ties with their relatives and villages.
