Who they are

The Bijogo live on the islands of the Bijagós Archipelago, off the coast of Guinea-Bissau. Their livelihoods depend on the oil palm, a palm tree from which oil is extracted, as well as rice and seafood. Shellfish are their main source of animal protein. In their traditional religion, mangroves, beaches, and islets are sacred places where fishing and farming are forbidden. Their language is called Bidyogo, and traditional religions predominate, with Christians in the minority.
