Most Bilen live by agriculture and pastoralism, cultivating grains such as sorghum and maize, as well as raising herds of cattle and goats that sustain the household economy. Communities are organized into rural villages where cooperation among extended families is essential during planting and harvest seasons. Community gatherings resolve local disputes, and family celebrations, accompanied by feasts and traditional music, reinforce the bonds of honor and hospitality characteristic of the people.
Bilen society is divided almost equally between traditional Christianity and Sunni Islam. Many Christians belong to the Eastern-rite Catholic or Orthodox churches, while Muslim communities follow customs inherited from historical regional interactions. Faith is deeply intertwined with social life, and elements of ancestral spirituality still influence rites of protection and honor for ancestors, sustaining a harmonious coexistence among different religious confessions within families.
