Who they are

The Bimoba live in northeastern Ghana, in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo and Sabobal-Chereponi districts of the Northern Region, and in Garu-Tempane in the Upper East Region. Bunkpurugu is their main town. Bimoba territory also extends into Togo and was divided between the two countries. They are closely related to the Moba of Togo and speak Moba, a language in the Gur group. They settled in the less fertile and more isolated parts of the region, and farming is their main occupation.

How they live

The Bimoba grow crops and raise animals for a living under difficult conditions: income from farming varies from year to year. Each household has a compound occupied by an extended family, including the head of the household, his wives and children, and usually his younger brothers. Several family groups form a clan, which supports its relatives. A woman joins her husband’s clan, land and property are passed down through the father’s line, and marriage within one’s own clan is forbidden.

What they believe

Most Bimoba follow their traditional religion, with Christians and Muslims in the minority. Within families, people ask ancestral spirits for help and offer animal sacrifices in a hut built for them within each compound. Christians and Muslims sometimes regard one another as pagans. Elders tend to reject Christianity because, to them, believing in Jesus means leaving their traditional religion.

Needs

Income from farming varies from year to year, and providing for their families is a constant concern. Peace also matters: a 2022 study involving eight elders describes a blood ritual as a traditional Bimoba path to reconciliation in conflicts between communities. Bimoba Christians need help to speak respectfully about Jesus with relatives and Muslim neighbors without getting into arguments.
