Agriculture is the central pillar of Burji livelihood. Renowned for their refined hillside farming techniques, they produce grains, coffee, and root crops, alongside small-scale livestock rearing. The family structure is patriarchal and places great value on mutual cooperation in farm work. In urban areas, many engage in the trade of grains and manufactured goods, maintaining strong bonds of solidarity with their home villages.
The spiritual landscape of the Burji is diverse. In Ethiopia, many identify with evangelical Christianity or the Orthodox Church, whereas communities in northern Kenya predominantly adhere to Islam. Simultaneously, ancient ethnic beliefs, such as rituals dedicated to guardian spirits and harvest blessings, still influence the customs of several families across both nations.
