Who they are

Cape Verdeans come from the islands of Cape Verde, in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. Most are descended from Portuguese people and Africans brought to the islands through the slave trade. Their language, Cape Verdean Creole (kabuverdianu), developed from Portuguese and West African languages. Repeated droughts in the twentieth century led many people to emigrate, and today there are Cape Verdean communities in several countries. In the United States, they settled mainly in New England.

How they live

Money sent home by people living abroad is an important source of income for many island families. Tourism, trade and transport provide many jobs, and the country depends on imports for most of its food. Expensive fares and unreliable transport between the islands limit jobs and business opportunities outside the tourist centers.

What they believe

Most are Catholic. There are also other Christian churches, and there are Evangelicals among the Cape Verdeans living in Angola.

Needs

Cape Verdeans need consistent biblical teaching and local leaders equipped to teach. On islands less involved in tourism, job opportunities are scarce, especially for young people and women.
