Who they are

The Christian presence among the Chakhesang is closely linked to Baptist churches. They are one of the Naga peoples of northeastern India and live mainly in Nagaland. Their name combines parts of the names Chokri, Khezha and Sangtam, three groups connected with the formation of this identity.

Village life revolves around farming, handicrafts and relationships between families. The arrival of Christianity also brought changes to social practices, such as wedding celebrations.

How they live

Rice, beans, corn, millet and vegetables are among the crops grown by the Chakhesang. Hunting and fishing supplement their food supply, but game and fish are becoming scarcer. Bamboo and woven cane products help generate income, and women sell handmade textiles. Marriages are arranged by family leaders, and no one may marry someone from their own clan, the group of relatives descended from a common ancestor. Wedding celebrations bring the entire village together for singing, dancing and meals.

What they believe

Before the arrival of Christianity, the Chakhesang followed beliefs that attributed presence and activity to spirits. Today, religious life is mainly Christian, with a strong Baptist tradition. Strengthening the churches involves caring for families and helping each generation come to know and practice the teachings of Jesus.

Needs

Young Chakhesang people need education that broadens their employment opportunities. Many leave their villages to look for work in cities, but rural schooling limits their prospects. Families who live off the land also find that hunting and fishing no longer provide as much as they once did. Churches can support these young people by combining biblical teaching, fellowship and practical support for life away from home.
