The chuanqing live primarily in the mountainous regions of Guizhou Province in southwestern China. Although they speak Mandarin and share many customs with the Han majority, they maintain a distinct cultural identity, marked by their own traditions and typical attire during festive days. Historically classified as an officially unrecognized minority group within the country, the chuanqing preserve a strong attachment to their community roots and to rural life in the hills.

Traditional beliefs combine Buddhist practices with ancestor worship and folk rituals of spiritual protection. Fear of spirits and the pursuit of harmony and prosperity guide important ceremonies at births, weddings, and funerals.
