Cigano Caló
The Caló Romani form a historical branch of the Romani people, established mainly in the Iberian Peninsula and spread across various countries, including Latin America. Their identity is marked by strong attachment to kinship ties, unrestricted respect for the elderly, and the preservation of Caló, a unique language that blends elements of Romani with local languages. Known for their rich musical and artistic heritage, they deeply influenced Iberian culture, such as the development of flamenco art. Despite contemporary urban transformations, they keep alive an unshakable sense of community, honor, and internal solidarity.

Community life revolves around the extended family and mutual protection networks. Traditionally engaged in independent trade, open-air markets, and livestock breeding, many today pursue varied urban occupations. Important decisions and internal conflicts are usually mediated by respected patriarchs. Music, singing, and family celebrations are central to daily life, serving as a vital space for affirming their roots and passing on traditional customs to the children.
The vast majority has roots in historic traditional Christianity, heavily influenced by the popular devotions of the Iberian region. In recent decades, however, there has been a significant movement of conversion to Pentecostal evangelical churches. In these spaces, faith is lived with fervor, intensity, and distinct cultural expression, with services sung in the people’s characteristic style. Moral transformation and freedom from addictions are themes highly valued in their community testimonies.

Many families still face challenges such as social exclusion, persistent prejudice, and low levels of formal schooling. There is a need for vocational training for the younger generations and for decent housing conditions in certain peripheral areas. Spiritually, the primary need is deep discipleship that consolidates faith and builds biblical maturity beyond emotional experiences.
