People
The Cuyonon are a people originally from the Cuyo archipelago in the Philippine province of Palawan. Historically known for their seafaring skills and rich musical traditions, they played a key role in the settlement and cultural exchange of Palawan’s entire coastal region. Their mother tongue, Cuyonon, remains central to their identity, both on their home islands and in migrant communities. They maintain a strong sense of community and deep family ties that endure despite the pressures of modern life.

Cuyonon life is traditionally tied to the sea and agriculture. Small-scale fishing and the cultivation of rice, cassava, and coconuts provide a livelihood for most island families. Their communities value cooperation among neighbors and local festivities, featuring traditional dances and songs accompanied by traditional stringed instruments. Fiber crafts and weaving are also part of daily life at home and the local economy.
The vast majority of the Cuyonon identify with historic Christianity, reflecting centuries of influence in the region. Alongside this, traditional animist customs and beliefs persist in popular thought, expressed through reverence for nature spirits and traditional rituals for protection. There is a real need for a clearer biblical understanding so that faith transforms every area of daily life.

Communities on the smaller islands face geographic isolation, with limited access to regular medical care and employment opportunities beyond subsistence activities. Because they lie in the frequent path of tropical storms, they need resilient infrastructure and social and economic support. Spiritually, there is a need for trained leaders and ongoing discipleship to strengthen local churches in their walk of faith.
