People
Who they are
The Duma, also called Aduma, live in central Gabon along the upper Ogooué River, near Lastoursville. Their name is commonly understood to mean “men of the river”: they are known as canoe builders and boatmen who carried people and goods along the Ogooué. Today they make a living by growing cassava and bananas, fishing and small-scale trading. Most identify as Christians, mainly in Protestant churches, and many still hold beliefs about ancestral spirits.
