The Durava form a traditional community on the island of Sri Lanka, belonging to Sinhalese society along the southern and western coasts. Historically associated with traditional occupations involving palm cultivation and past military service, their members preserve a strong sense of community and family identity. They share the Sinhala language and the cultural customs of the majority of the island’s population, maintaining close ties to community life in their coastal villages and towns.

How they live
Everyday life among the Durava varies between coastal villages and urban centers. While their ancestors traditionally harvested palm products and worked in local trade, many today work in fishing, agriculture, public service, and the service sector. The extended family plays a central role in daily decisions, mutual support, and the celebration of cultural festivals that bring neighbors together around traditional Sinhalese food.
What they believe
The vast majority of the Durava follow Theravada Buddhism, which shapes rites of passage, morality, and daily life through temple visits and lunar festivals. Historical influences have also left a Catholic minority in the community. Popular devotional practices and respect for Buddhist teachings on merit and karma continue to define the spiritual understanding of most families.
