The Duya are an ethnic group inhabiting central Nigeria, mainly in rural areas surrounded by hills and fertile valleys. Also known historically by local names linked to their land, they preserve a distinctive cultural identity expressed in the Duya language and traditions passed down through the generations.
Their community life is closely tied to their ancestral territory, where they maintain customs and community celebrations that strengthen kinship ties and cooperation between village families.

Most Duya families depend on traditional farming for their livelihood. They primarily grow yams, corn, sorghum and cassava, as well as keeping small domestic animals around the villages.
The social structure centers on the extended family and the authority of respected community leaders. Important decisions and heavier agricultural tasks often involve neighbors coming together to help, with celebrations featuring music and traditional dishes shared by the community.
Traditional beliefs still shape the worldview of most Duya people. They revere ancestral spirits and believe in invisible forces that influence health, harvests and community harmony.
Seasonal rituals and protective ceremonies are common practices in daily life. Although there is contact with Christianity in the region, many still seek spiritual security exclusively in the customs inherited from their ancestors.

Duya communities lack basic health services, sanitation and adequately equipped schools in rural areas. Spiritually, the local Christian community is very small and lacks biblical materials in their mother tongue for discipleship and growth in faith.
