Who they are

The Dzing live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Idiofa Territory, Kwilu Province, along the Kasai River. Also called Ding, they are a Bantu-speaking people. Groups known as the Western Ding are associated with the Kamtsha region, while the Eastern Ding live in the Kapia sector.

Families and clans have a central place in their traditional social organization. Descent was traced through the mother, while couples lived with the husband’s side of the family after marriage. Clans also had political and economic roles.

How they live

Farming is the basis of life for most Dzing families, who grow cassava, corn, beans and peanuts. Some also fish or hunt, and young people sometimes take paid work in nearby towns. Traditional music reflected the organization of the village: in mfung-a-miti, wooden horns, large drums and gourd rattles each represented a person in community life. The performance portrayed peace, tension and conflict.

What they believe

Christianity is part of life for many Dzing families, with prayers, worship services and Christian celebrations in their communities. The Catholic tradition is present among them. At the same time, some Christians hold on to beliefs in spiritual forces associated with illness, safety and everyday success. In times of difficulty, the search for protection can bring a return to practices driven by fear of spiritual harm.
