The community’s daily life is linked to traditional corn and bean farming and weaving on handlooms. The traditional market in Chichicastenango is the center of social and commercial life, attracting residents from surrounding villages to trade textiles, pottery, and crops. Extended families and community councils play a fundamental role in resolving conflicts and passing on traditions.
Local religious life combines traditional beliefs with practices introduced during the colonial period. Rituals involving the burning of copal incense and appeals to nature spirits and ancestors still take place at outdoor altars and in front of historic churches. At the same time, evangelical communities have grown, encouraging worship of God grounded in Scripture and expressed in the local language.
