People
The Eleme live in Rivers State in southern Nigeria, in communities such as Ogale, Alode, Ebubu and Onne. Ogale is the seat of local government.
The Eleme language belongs to the group of languages known as Ogonoid. Traditionally farmers, the Eleme now live alongside refineries and industrial facilities built on their land, where both Eleme and people from other groups work.

Families farm small plots around the villages. Yams, cassava and palm oil are among the products sold, while bananas, plantains and corn are also grown for household consumption. In addition to farming, there is work in industry. At weddings, a procession goes from the bride’s home to the community square, with drumming, singing and dancing. Wrestling is also a popular spectator sport among the Eleme.
Most Eleme identify as Christians, while some continue to follow traditional religions. In 1910, St. Stephen’s Anglican Church was established in the community of Alode; in 1912, a church school opened there. Before the arrival of Christianity, religious practices included worship of deities, earth spirits and spirits of the dead, with sacrifices and drink offerings. These beliefs continued to influence the lives of the people after churches arrived.
