People
The Ende are an indigenous people who inhabit the central region of the island of Flores in Indonesia. With a rich culture deeply connected to their volcanic and coastal lands, they maintain their own language, part of the Austronesian family, and a very strong community identity. Over time, interaction between coastal and inland populations has helped shape their traditions and their openness to trade and cultural exchange within the archipelago.

Most families depend on subsistence farming, growing rice, corn, and cassava on the hillsides, as well as fishing along the coast. Textile crafts, especially the traditional weaving of finely decorated fabrics, hold great cultural value and provide a source of income. Community life is organized around family ties and villages where elders are involved in important decisions.
Most of the population professes Christianity, the result of centuries of historical influence on the island, while significant portions follow Islam, particularly in coastal areas. In everyday life, practices involving ancestral spirits and reverence for them remain present among many residents, revealing a strong blending of ancient local traditions and formal religion.

Many communities face challenges involving basic healthcare infrastructure, sanitation, and limited access to quality schools in mountainous areas. Spiritually, the greatest need is for in-depth discipleship that helps believers move beyond merely nominal Christianity and live out the gospel in practical, transformative ways.
