Farming is the basis of the Gbari livelihood. They grow yams, corn, millet and peanuts, and yams are their staple food. Gbari women are known as potters, and blacksmithing, which produces hoes and machetes, is a long-established trade among the people. Christians, Muslims and followers of traditional religion live together in the same household and within extended families.
Traditional religion remains strong among the Gbari, alongside Christianity and Islam. In this religion, Shekwoyi is the supreme God, and ancestral spirits are seen as intermediaries between people and God. Even among those who have become Christians or Muslims, traditional practices remain part of their worldview. There are Gbari churches and Christians, but faith in Jesus has not reached most families.

The Gbari need better farming tools and techniques and good schools, especially in rural areas. In matters of faith, they need clear gospel teaching that addresses fear of ancestral spirits and witchcraft, as well as materials for Christian growth in the Gbari language. They also need Gbari leaders who can help Christians follow Jesus within their own culture.
