Who they are

The Gor live in southern Chad, near the border with the Central African Republic, in about 40 large villages around Bodo, their commercial and cultural center. Many Gor have also moved to Chadian cities such as Doba, Moundou, Sarh and the capital, N’Djamena. Their language belongs to the Sara group. Neighboring peoples, such as the Kaba and the Mbay, speak closely related languages, and the Gor call them brothers.

The Gor language is used for communication, worship, education and trade. An association of speakers, registered in 2005, publishes literacy books and has translated books of the Bible.

How they live

Most Gor make their living from farming. They grow millet and other grains, cotton, peanuts, beans, potatoes and tubers. They raise sheep, goats, chickens and cattle. The region supplies grain to nearby markets. At weekly markets, groups of villages, called groupements, run small businesses.

What they believe

The first missionaries arrived in the Bodo district in 1923. Today most villages have at least one church, and the vast majority of the Gor identify as Christian. There is also a minority who follow traditional religions and another who are Muslim. The Gor language is also used in worship services, and Gor reading books are used for teaching in literacy centers, in worship services and in homes.

Needs

In several villages, drinking water is difficult to obtain because the groundwater lies very deep underground. A full primary education is available only in Bodo. A study published in 2025 found that educated Gor living in N’Djamena contributed money and materials to promote the language but had little involvement in learning and using its written form.
