Who they are
The Goulai live in southern Chad, in the regions of Logone Oriental, Mandoul and Tandjilé, and are part of the group of peoples known as Sara. They speak Gulay. They are farmers and live mainly in close-knit villages where extended families are at the center of social life.

How they live
The Goulai grow millet, sorghum, cassava and peanuts, and raise goats and poultry. Extended families include relatives beyond parents and children. Many families perform rites at birth, marriage and death as part of their religious practice.

There are Christians and Muslims among the Goulai, and traditional beliefs remain strong, with influence attributed to spirits and ancestors. Evangelicals are few.
