The Brahui are a people of Balochistan, a region of dry mountains and deserts in southwestern Pakistan. Their language, also called Brahui, is a curiosity: it belongs to the same family as the languages of southern India, such as Tamil, even though it is spoken very far from them. No one knows for sure how this came about. Many Brahui also speak Balochi, the language of their neighbors, and over time some have stopped speaking Brahui.
There are more than 5 million of them. Most live in Pakistan, around cities such as Kalat, Khuzdar and Quetta, and there are smaller groups in southern Afghanistan and eastern Iran. Traditionally they were herders who moved with their flocks of sheep and goats according to the season. Today many live in villages and towns, work in farming or trade, and are organized into tribes led by chiefs.
The Brahui are Sunni Muslims, the largest branch of Islam, and their faith is tied to the honor of the family and the tribe. There are almost no followers of Jesus among them, and Christian materials in the Brahui language are very few.
