People
The Guadeloupe Creoles make up the majority of the population of this overseas Caribbean archipelago. Their cultural identity has emerged from the historical meeting of African roots, European heritage and local Antillean traditions. Guadeloupean Creole is spoken with passion and pride in everyday life, serving as the most intimate medium for their rich artistic expression, folk music and shared community memories.

Community life is shaped by celebrations, aromatic cuisine and the rhythms of traditional drums. Many families depend on agriculture, fishing, public services and tourism. Strong family ties are highly valued, although households often face economic challenges, a high cost of living and young people’s search for opportunities beyond the islands.
The vast majority profess Christianity, with a historically predominant Roman Catholic tradition alongside an established evangelical movement. In many homes, formal religious practice coexists with traditional folk beliefs, protective rituals and superstitions inherited from the colonial and Afro-Caribbean past.

Guadeloupe faces high unemployment, especially among young people, creating uncertainty about the future. Spiritually, the greatest need is for a nominal Christian heritage to give way to a deep, personal relationship with Christ, supported by consistent discipleship and churches that engage meaningfully with society.
