People
Who they are
The Guebie live in the Gagnoa area of southwestern Ivory Coast and speak a language in the Kru family. They live mainly by subsistence farming, growing cassava, rice, maize and plantains, and sell cocoa and rubber. Most follow traditional beliefs, a substantial portion are Muslim, and Christians are a minority. A 2020 study reports that French and Bété are replacing Guebie in everyday life and that the language is not always passed on to children.
