Gurage, Inor
ReachedThe Gurage Inor are a subgroup of the Gurage people who inhabit the highlands of southwestern Ethiopia. They speak the Inor language, belonging to the Ethiopian Semitic family, and possess their own distinct cultural identity, deeply rooted in the land and the traditions of their ancestors. Known for their hard work and trade skills, they maintain close ties between the rural villages of their homeland and community members who have migrated to major urban centers across the country.

Village life centers around the cultivation of the false banana, locally known as ensete, which provides the staple of their daily diet. Families also grow coffee, vegetables, and raise livestock. The community structure is strong, supported by traditional councils of elders and mutual aid networks called iddir, which are essential for conducting weddings, funerals, and collective projects.
The majority of the Inor profess Sunni Islam, but there is also a significant presence of Christians, primarily Orthodox and Evangelical. In the daily lives of many residents, traditional religious practices and beliefs in ancestral spirits still coexist with formal faith, influencing crop protection rituals and family ceremonies.
