Who they are

The Gurage Kistane, also known as Soddo Gurage, are an Ethiosemitic people who historically inhabit the highlands of south-central Ethiopia. They are distinguished within the Gurage cluster by speaking the Kistane language and by preserving a community identity closely tied to their native mountains and historical Christian faith.

Many community members have also settled in urban centers such as Addis Ababa, where they are recognized for their commercial dynamism, while maintaining close ties of solidarity with their home villages.

How they live

Traditional village life centers on the cultivation of enset, also known as the false banana, which provides the staple food for families, complemented by coffee and grains. Mutual cooperation is vital: community associations organize support for funerals, weddings, and local improvements. Even those engaged in urban commerce maintain the custom of returning regularly to their ancestral homeland to celebrate important occasions.

What they believe

The vast majority adheres to the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Christian tradition, which shapes agricultural calendars, rites of passage, and communal fasts throughout the year. The name Kistane historically reflects this ancient Christian commitment. Small evangelical communities are growing in the region, at times facing tensions with relatives who regard the historic faith as a non-negotiable part of family honor.

Needs

Families face economic hardships resulting from the scarcity of fertile land and the lack of infrastructure in rural areas. The youth exodus to urban areas leads to a lack of opportunities and a disruption of family support networks. Spiritually, there is a profound need for discipleship centered on grace and accessible biblical teaching in their mother tongue.
