Gurage, Muher

Life for the Muher revolves around family farming, with particular emphasis on the cultivation of enset, a plant known as the false banana, which serves as the foundation of their diet and culture. The food derived from this plant, kocho, is central to their meals and celebrations. Society highly values mutual cooperation through traditional support systems for harvesting and house building, maintaining close bonds among families and neighbors.

The vast majority of the Muher adhere to the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian tradition, historically intertwined with local customs and rites. Although religiosity is a natural part of public identity and annual festivals, daily practice frequently includes reverence for ancient spiritual traditions of the region. Personal knowledge of the biblical message and the gospel of grace remains limited in everyday life.

The communities face the geographic isolation of certain villages, a lack of adequate healthcare infrastructure, and few higher education options for the youth. Spiritually, there is a great need for biblical discipleship that goes beyond inherited religious tradition and nurtures a living faith centered on God’s Word.
