The Gwak live in Bauchi State, Nigeria, in the Dass and Tafawa Balewa areas. The area where their language is spoken extends southward from the town of Dass to Tafawa Balewa, west of the Gongola River. The Gwak language is also known as Gingwak, Jaranci, Jarawan Bununu and Jaracin Kasa, and is part of the Jar language group. Gwak speakers are distinct from other communities also known by the broader name Jarawa, such as their northern neighbors, who speak Bankal.

The Gwak are farmers and traders, and their homeland lies in a plateau region of Bauchi State.
Most Gwak are Muslims. Christians form a minority and have leaders from among their own people. These leaders have asked for more Scriptures in Gwak for teaching in Christian communities, and the church’s desire for more Scriptures grew after the film about Jesus became available in their language. Some also follow traditional beliefs, with fear of spirits and faith in a supreme being.
A people only truly understands the gospel when they hear it in the language of their heart. See how far the translation has come.

The Christian leaders’ request for more Scriptures in Gwak points to the value of teaching in their own language. Training local people to explain the Bible and care for believers is a prayer concern for the communities of Dass and Tafawa Balewa.
