Who they are
The Halam Chorei live in Tripura and Assam, in northeastern India, and belong to the wider group of Halam communities. In Tripura, they grow rice, vegetables and pineapples. There are Christian and Hindu families among them. Christians have been using the Bengali Bible in worship services, but young people in the community report difficulty understanding the language and want to study the Scriptures in Chorei.
